Our Approach

A Person-Centered Positive Behaviour Approach

At Breton Ability Centre, we recognize and celebrate that every one is unique. Our approach to support includes individualized development plans, living options, learning and educational programs and opportunities for employment and recreation, not just for the residents that call Breton Ability their home, but to clients living in the community. Everything we do is with a goal of helping people with varying abilities achieve their full potential.

Our plans are designed based on the right of the individual we support, and at the heart of the plan is supported decision making, the positive approach behaviour philosophy, and the Low Arousal Approach.

We also understand that community inclusion is one of the most important ways our residents can build confidence and the social skills needed to thrive. As an organization, we are committed to:
Learning & Living Opportunities

Providing living, learning and development opportunities for all residents to prepare them for inclusive community living.

Advocacy

Advocating for and support the day to day living needs of our residents.

Community Inclusion

Developing opportunities for community inclusion and sense of belonging.

Generating Solutions

Generating solutions with the Department of Community Services and others for increased access to the community.

Education & Awareness

Providing outreach and education to the community.

The following changes and opportunities have influenced this new direction for Breton Ability Centre:

The UN Convention on the Right of Persons with Disabilities: To promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities and to promote respect for their inherent dignity.

Research on the benefits of community living and independence: There is evidence that individuals moving from institutions to community settings consistent develop their daily living skills. Increasing independence and opportunities for independence leads to an improved quality of life.

Changing needs of families and individuals with varying abilities: We are seeing an increase in the number of individuals with multiple issues and complex needs, requiring flexible, client-directed, multi-disciplinary support approaches, across multiple sectors. The related training for our employees also needs to shift to provide services that are relationship-based and evidence-based, while keeping everyone safe.

You can help improve the lives of Breton Ability Centre residents.
