Community Inclusion

At Breton Ability Centre, we work in collaboration with the Department of Community Services, Disability Support Program, to prepare our residents to transition to smaller, community-based living options, and develop more opportunities for community access, and inclusion.

Fostering Independence

BAC believes in fostering independence among individuals with varying abilities will allow them to achieve a life that is meaningful to them. Our programs and services provide as much support as needed based on the individual. Our residents are taught independent living skills and responsibilities such as laundry, money management and banking, cooking, household cleaning, and more.

Recreation and Leisure

Our Recreation Therapy department has built many partnerships with organizations in the community such as Equine Therapy at Sunrise Stables, Yoga at Breathing Space, Learning in Motion (through the NSCC), community programs such as those offered through Autism Nova Scotia, and the YMCA, and a long list of athletic sports through Special Olympics. Our team works hard to improve access and participation in community recreational programs for each and every one of our residents.

At BAC, we provide support to individuals with varying abilities to help them foster independence through housing supports such as:

Community Group Homes

Breton Ability Centre supports residents in homes located in neighbourhoods across the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, putting a special emphasis on choice and individualized living spaces for our residents.

Breton Ability Centre
Child and Youth Home

Our new Child and Youth Home has been designed with consultations with renowned psychologist, and expert in housing needs for people with Autism, Dr. Bo Elven, and has features that help mitigate the processing difficulties in children with Autism.

Home for Special Care

At Breton Ability Centre, we support individuals of varying abilities from across Nova Scotia. These individuals may be coping with complex challenges due to severe developmental disabilities, mental health challenges and/or complicating physical disabilities. We support individuals to learn and develop personal, social, vocational, and educational skills to enable their transition to inclusive community living (belonging, living, learning, working, leisure).

You can help improve the lives of Breton Ability Centre residents.
