At Breton Ability, we are committed to supporting people with varying abilities to live lives filled with meaning, dignity, and choice. Guided by the Nova Scotia Human Rights Remedy, we are working alongside the 64 individuals we support in the large facility to prepare for their transition into the community. In addition, we support over 100 individuals in our community living programs and through our Outreach program. Together, with our clients, we envision what a good life looks like for each person and provide the tools, skills, and support they need to make decisions, exercise their rights, and shape their own futures.
Each person we support has an individualized development plan that reflects their unique strengths, needs, and aspirations. Our programs focus on building social, personal, community readiness/navigation, and educational skills, empowering individuals to participate fully and actively in their communities.
Our residential options include both a central support facility (set to close by 2028) and fifteen community homes throughout the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. For skill development, individuals can participate in training programs at Thrive Ability – our Learning and Employment Centre – gain experience through the Ability Collective, our social enterprises, and explore opportunities with employers across the community.
Our dedicated team of over 400 professionals – including psychologists, social workers, nurses, occupational therapists, dietitians, and more, work collaboratively to ensure each individual is supported with compassion and expertise.
All admissions to Breton Ability Centre are managed by the Nova Scotia Department of Opportunities and Social Development (previously the Department of Community Services)

Inclusion, independence, support and acceptance of all persons with varying disabilities.
We believe in creating an innovative environment which promotes teamwork, learning, wellness and safety as we enrich the lives of the people that we support.
At Breton Ability Centre we hold certain values as basic to the way we interact with each other, with the people we serve and for all who seek our assistance. These values include:
We are responsible for our actions and behaviours, our decisions, and related consequences. We are honest with each other, and trust that we will support each other and all those we serve. We treat each other and those we serve fairly and are genuine in our interaction with all.
We are committed to a culture of innovation through ongoing learning from formal education, personal experience, and/or learning from each other. We especially encourage learning for the benefit of those we serve.
We value every resident, residents’ family members, and each other. We ensure that everyone is included or represented when decisions are made that impact them, and that everyone is treated fairly. All have equal opportunity to participate in available programs based on their abilities and desire.
We are responsible for effectively communicating with each other. We will communicate in a way that demonstrates respect and compassion for all residents, their families and each other. We recognize the good in all we interact with – our colleagues and those we serve. We are caring individuals who strive to understand others and treat them as we would want to be treated.
The safety and wellness (both physical and psychological) of residents and employees is highly valued. We ensure that residents and employees have access to resources and effective action should they feel unsafe at any time.
We are committed to working with others to achieve our goals. We value enabling others to reach their goals, work as a part of a team, and to support each other.
